I'll use this blog to discuss the journey of my writing process, connect with those who share my passion for reading, and have a little fun along the way.
The Little Free Library organization became a nonprofit on May 17, 2012. This year, they’ve decided to celebrate by declaring May 11-17, 2025 as Little Free Library Week. Through Little Free Library book exchanges, millions of books are exchanged each year, profoundly increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds.
I live in a small rural county in Central Virginia where we are fortunate enough to have a lovely public library in our county seat. I am so grateful that those who planned our library had the vision to build it big enough to house a large meeting room for programs and events, a separate children’s area, and plenty of room for the expansion of the library’s holdings.
Unfortunately, our county is large and its population is fanned out across its many miles. It is not always feasible to ride into town to pick up a book. In 2016, our Friends of the Library undertook a project to put a Little Free Library in each of our Board of Supervisor’s districts. These Little Free Libraries serve as an extension of the library, offering books for children and adults. During the summer months, the Friends stock the Little Free Libraries with books from the county’s public school reading list, ensuring the opportunity for school age children K-12 to read a required book over the summer.
I volunteer to fill two of the Little Free Libraries on a weekly basis. It’s always fun to see which books have been taken out to be read and what people have added to the libraries (Take a Book, Leave a Book).
New and Indie authors should hunt up Little Free Libraries in their area. Adding a signed copy of a book to a Little Free Library could increase your fan base, grow your author recognition, and give someone the pleasure of reading your book.
